Hexane is widely used in the production of oleoresins, resinoids and absolutes. Two ongoing regulatory
developments at EU level could significantly impact its future use.

First, under chemicals legislation, ECHA identified n-hexane as a Substance of Very High Concern
(SVHC)
in December 2025 due to its irreversible neurotoxic effects. It was subsequently added to
the Candidate List in February 2026, triggering communication obligations for manufacturers and importers
towards their downstream supply chain.

In parallel, EFSA has launched a full re-evaluation of “technical hexane” as a food extraction
solvent
under Directive 2009/32/EC, as the existing assessment from the 1990s is considered outdated.
Technical hexane contains approximately 30-70% n-hexane. While EFSA has indicated that no immediate
health risk has been identified at this stage, the review is ongoing and further data from stakeholders will
be required
.

In response, EFEO is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders and has launched a dedicated
task force
to coordinate industry expertise on the use of hexane in the production of oleoresins, resinoids and
absolutes. Interested members are invited to contact the EFEO office to participate.
