On 15 April, the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee voted in favour of the proposed ECHA Regulation,
which aims to expand the agency’s mandate considering its new responsibilities.
At this stage, and in line with the Council’s position, a broad political support for reinforcing ECHA’s role and
establishing a more coherent EU scientific assessment framework has been reached.
With regards to the chairperson of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) within ECHA,
the ENVI committee has reverted to the European Commission’s original proposal, which would see an
employee of ECHA as chairperson.
In terms of next steps, plenary vote is expected on 28 April in plenary.
Against this backdrop, EFEO is committed to continuing engagement in the context of the next regulatory
steps.
